Zentangles #2, 3, & 4

I worked on some Zentangles tonight and one while at Church on Sunday. They are all done with Prismacolor fine line markers. The black is .03 and the red, blue, and brownish color are .005. I had some brainless fun with these while listening to television tonight. I will use them for trades if one comes up.

Tommy

My husband's sister and her husband have a cat named Tommy. He is a very lovable cat and loves to be petted. Problem is, if you stop, he will nip your leg or hand. He doesn't want you to stop.

They inherited Tommy. Leon's dad had Tommy and another cat. when he passed away, they inherited the two and their household was stuffed with 6 cats. They are now down to 3. One really mean one, one shy one, and then Tommy. He's the only one I ever get to see.

Tommy was fed very sparingly by grandpa. He didn't want him to get fat. Tommy when he came to this home, could never get enough to eat. So they felt sorry for him and now he is a really fat baby. Funny thing is the "parents" are health and exercise nuts. This is their second fat cat.

I decided to do a cp portrait of Tommy. I think this turned out pretty good. His "parents" think it looks like him. And that is the point to make them happy.

I used colored mi-tienes paper about 9x11 inches in various brands of colored pencil.

Aprons

In the 50s and 60s a lot of women wore aprons a lot. My mom always seemed to have on an apron. So one of my memories cards is of an apron. She wore the plainer type apron with gathers and a waistband that tied. A lot of the time they were made from gingham fabric.

Checkers

Checkers was one of the board games my family played when I was young. It was easy enough for young ones and fun enough for older ones. Here was a postcard I sent to signchick in Oklahoma for the Memories trade.

Also the card I sent to Pennsylvania. It is paper muffin cups. My mom did a lot of baking back then. She would make something like cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, cookies, or yeast rolls, and when we would get home from school, the house smelled of the luscious baked goods. She also would take these cups and fill them with goodies like chocolate chips, nuts, and shredded coconut as a treat for us.

Freedom Gone Bye-Bye

Well I didn't last long being trade free. I signed up for Drawspace's March trade. Music/musical instruments. I have already finished 6. So far I will need 12 but the sign up hasn't closed yet. I am doing something a little different. I won't spoil it yet. When they are finished, I will post them all here.

More of my Memories cards have arrived at their destinations. Paper dolls, plastic pop (snap) beads, and a card from an Animal Rummy pack of cards. The paper doll is reminiscent of the Betsy McCall paper dolls that were in the McCalls Magazines. The beads were pull apart beads you could make longer or shorter necklaces or bracelets. And Animal Rummy was probably the only card game I knew back then. So easy for even younger kids to do.

Red to Gray

My Friday is getting old. Her face is getting more and more gray. Photos of her make her look completely white in the face. My baby is 10. Still in good shape except for a few things she has had a problem with most of her life. No hip problems which I'm happy about. Her breed is known for bad hips. When she wags her tail, it looks like she is making a u-turn. She wags her whole back end. I was so worried about that if she had developed hip problems.

Friday is such a pretty girl. I have done many art pictures of her. She is a red Golden Retriever and very tall and thin. Most of her life she has been the most hyper dog I have ever seen. Even her veterinarian could hardly believe she was so hyper and for so long a time. Even spaying her didn't calm her down much. She is much better as she gets older but that hyperness is still in her.

I worked on this picture of her yesterday and today. I thought I was finished last night but really wasn't satisfied with it. I removed some of the color using scotch tape and a moldable eraser, then started in again. I still find it lacking something, but I can live with it now. I don't think any more work will make it better. I will call it a lesson learned. Various colored pencil brands on Bristol Smooth 6x6 inches.

Pug Finished

I finished my little pug. The reference was provided by puglady on Wetcanvas. This is 6x6 inches on Strathmore Bristol Smooth using various brands of colored pencils.

Dog Breed - Pug

On Wetcanvas in the Animal and Wildlife Forum they are doing threads for dog breeds. I'm not sure how long each lasts, but each new thread features a different breed. It lists the show standards and characteristics, then posts some photos for use, then anyone can post their versions.

I haven't joined any of the threads yet. I intended to with the first which I think was a Mastiff. They have also had Irish Setters with some beautiful photos. I will probably work on one of those eventually.

But today I worked on a pug. I had to look about 4 pages back in the forum to find the pug link. Here it is: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=547518. I am doing the puppy with the rubber ducky in his mouth. I just can't pass up the level of cute in that photo.

I have made a couple of scans as I work. Here are the first two.

Hip Hip Hooray

I finished my Memories trade. Now to get a new roll of stamps tomorrow and mail the 10 envelopes waiting. I feel such a relief getting them finished. I was ready to finish this one. Now I am debating whether to join the Drawspace ATC exchange of music/musical instruments. All that gorgeous wood and brass is calling my name. I still have a few days to decide and sign up.

Colors

All of my memories art cards have been very colorful. I have enjoyed doing them in the many colors. I am sure most of the things that I remember were not so colorful. It was a simpler time and we didn't have so many choices of items or colors. And it seems to me that the colors weren't quite as bright. The advertiser's probably didn't have the competition they did then, and surely they didn't have the graphics and things they have in this time span.

I remember the first time I went to Disneyland. There is a Cinema Round theater there. It moves around a stage and can show you different time spans. I believe back then that the first stage showed really early times and a kitchen like it would have been in the pioneer days with the fireplace to cook. Then it moved to the next stage where progress had been made. I can't remember how many different stages we saw, but the last one was the house of the future.

I can't remember much about that house of the future but not many years later, that particular attraction was shut down for repairs and revamping. The house of the future had already arrived and probably had become house of the past.

These days I don't think they could keep up with that kind of attraction. Things change just too fast. It would be like a computer. You bring it home and it is already too old. Almost overnight.

Well here are a couple of cards that have arrived.

3 More Finished

I finished 3 more of my memory cards today. 7 more to go. I have all the envelopes addressed and ready to go. Now to get the cards in them. Two more arrived at their new homes. I will try to post them tomorrow. One is a candy necklace we used to buy as kids. We wore them around our necks and could take a bite any time we wanted. The only problem was, if you weren't careful, the necklace would get really sticky.

Drawspace will be starting their March trade soon. I would like to participate but not sure I can. It will be music/musical instruments. I think that would be a good one to practice. All that wood and brass.

Busy Weekend

I have had a busy weekend. A busy art weekend any way. I have finished several art cards and they will be mailed tomorrow. I only have 3 more African animals to do, and I'm moving quite rapidly thru the memories. I am really enjoying the memories as well as doing the artwork for them.

Here are the latest two African animals to reach their new owners.

Friday Night

The last couple of days I have been doing some weeding out of clutter in my house. Well maybe more like rearranging the clutter. Not sure I really got rid of anything. You know the old saying "I might need it some day".

I have finished 3 more memories cards and I have figured out a few more "ideas" for the cards. I had to put more African cards on hold. I think I burned out on those. I am giving myself a few days to concentrate on the memories cards instead.

The Moleskine Project started tonight on its journey. The originating gallery had them on display tonight from 4-10 in their own gallery. Now they will be moving around for one or two day shows to other destinations. There was a live feed but I forgot to sign onto it until it was too late.

I also want to try a portrait in colored pencil. I did the portrait kit from Ann Kullenberg's website. I wasn't too thrilled with my picture. But I got away from it for a couple days and now realize even tho it still looks kind of "paint-by-numberish", it does look pretty good. It's just that it has so many different colors and they seem to not go together in my eyes. But I when I look at a photo of a face, I don't see all the colors in it. I see the light and dark but don't really see yellows, blues, greens, etc.

I will hopefully work thru that eventually. We shall see. But I do need a lot of practice, practice, practice.

Scavenger Hunt #121

Here are some of my first sketches for the latest scavenger hunt hosted by fleur.

Arrival

The next two of my memory cards have arrived. One in CA and one in NC. The four I have finished and sent have all now arrived. I need to get busy with more, but I need to get more of my African Series finished first. Tonight I am working on Scavenger Hunt items before the current hunt is finished tomorrow. In by the skin of my nose again. This is becoming a habit I need to break.

Finished Cats

Well I finished my cats. In fact I did one too many. Now to figure out which to eliminate.

Thursday, February 19, 2009

And Even More Cats

Here are more cats that I have finished for the cat trade on Drawspace. I still have a few to go. Hopefully I can do some more tonight. Getting a little tired of cats tho.

Cats, Cats, & More Cats

I have been working on my cat ATCs. I have 13 finished of the 17 needed. They are all different. Some in graphite, some in colored pencil. Some look more cartoony than others. I'm happy with the way they are turning out. The next trade on Drawspace will be music and musical instruments. That should be a real challenge. I don't play an instrument and haven't really been around them much.

Baby Dolls and Pinwheels

I worked on two more memories trading cards today. I am having such a nice time with these cards and the memories. Each card I do seems to stir up more thoughts of things from the past

Tonight I was surfing looking for things that were popular in the 1950s. This brought back more special memories. I remember in the 60s that my mom used to make log planters from cans and plaster of Paris. She put the cans together and put the plaster over them forming what looked like a log with cut branches sticking out from it. She would use a fork and make texture in the plaster and then paint the logs. They were really quite attractive and she sold a few.

Another time she made these wall hangings from some bendable sheets that were like screening. She formed them to look like frames then attached dried cattails, flowers, cotton pods, etc to make a floral arrangement. Then they were sprayed with a gold paint.

Another hobby she did was making those resin grapes that everyone had on their coffee tables in the 60s. They had a wooden stem and a cluster of the resin grapes. The last set of them mom had was tossed thru their television by a burglar who trashed the house while looking for money.

The hobby that was most useful to me was her flower making. I'm not sure what kind of material they were made of (some kind of paper but thicker like cloth), but they had stems wrapped in green floral tape, leaves, and just about any kind of flowers. She made the boutonniere and wedding corsage for our wedding. My request was carnations and the deepest red...so they looked almost black. Very pretty when done.

My mother didn't work outside the house and she didn't even drive until I was a senior in high school. She was always home when I came home from school and most days I would walk in the door to the smell of fresh baked yeast rolls, cinnamon rolls, cookies or a fresh pot of beans cooking on the stove with cornbread in the oven. It was always such a nice greeting and made me feel glad to come home.

Memories

My second Memory art card has arrived in New York. My mom always gave us modeling clay. We tried so hard to keep the colors separated but eventually we had one big clump of gray. Many memories playing for hours and hours with my clay.

25 something

My first card for the 25 something trade has arrived at its new home in Canada. I am doing childhood memories. The first one was hula hoops.

I received my first hula hoop when I was in about 4th grade. We were in Oklahoma visiting my grandfather for the last time and he had grandma give us each $5. When we got home, we bought hula hoops with our money. They were so much fun and we soon had mastered the technique.

I have tried it since I have gotten older and thicker. Doesn't work any more. Too much hip and not enough action. And I felt like a dunce... awkward and not a pretty sight.

Scavenger Hunt #119

Can you believe that we are on Scavenger Hunt #119. Wow. How nice that we have made it this far. I hope we make it a lot farther. Come on #200.

I haven't been doing a very good job on the hunts. I have been jumping in at the last minute and throwing together a few sketches just to participate. But today I decided to do some proper sketches. I still won't finish this one but I did quite a few of them. It makes me feel better. I need to start right away when the new lists are posted. That is what I used to do when I finished them.

Cats and Crazy Cats

I am in an ATC trade at Drawspace forum of Cats/Crazy Cats. I have 17 to do and have 5 finished. This trade is for one month. That means we have to get 17 done and mailed in a month.

We have one of these trades at Drawspace once a month. Every month is a different theme. Several of the past monthly themes have been Undersea Life, Prehistoric, Flowers, Safari, and we have had several holiday themed ones. Most months I participate. I enjoy the shorter trades as people tend to follow thru with their cards. On the longer projects, many times people don't follow thru.

I couldn't tell you how many sign up and play along for a bit. Then they just disappear. Sometimes for a long time, sometimes forever, or even sign up for more projects. That becomes a problem as they usually receive cards but don't return theirs. I can understand if people have emergencies or health problems, but they should return to finish the cards once they are better. Especially if they are back participating in the forums. Even an apology would be nice.

Even when I had my knee surgery a year ago, I finished all my cards before the surgery. And I left an email for a couple people on the forums where they could find out what happened if I just disappeared.

That's why I enjoy the trades at Drawspace. Everyone seems so happy to do the trades and they don't seem at all fazed by having to do so many in such a short time. They are just happy to participate and enjoy the getting and the giving.

And this time we have 17 people plus myself who are working to get our cards done (and believe it or not some have theirs done and mailed in the first week or so) and anxiously waiting to see what new surprises arrive in the mail.

Here are 4 of the ones for the cat trade that I have finished.

Quiet Saturday

I have spent a quiet Saturday. Not feeling too perky but I did get a card done for the 25 Something trade. I can't show it yet but should be soon as it is going to New York. It should only take a couple of days.

This is the second one of my "theme" of memories. The first one is still making its way to Canada. I mailed it the 3rd of February.

I have been in a mini slump since sending off my Moleskine book to the Project. I think that little project took too much out of me. Artwork is meant to be done leisurely and with enjoyment not pumped out quickly to meet a deadline for mailing. That takes the fun from it. Hopefully I can get more into my trade projects now. So far I have been doing my usual graphite or colored pencil. Maybe I should think about a different style for some of these. They would give me a chance to try something new.

Art Blog Award

I received an Art Blog Award from Teresa at Blueberries Life and Art.Thank you Teresa. I am to list 7 things I love and then name 7 more artists to honor.

Like Teresa my first love is God, then family, and friends.

1. I love my fur and feather babies. They have given me so much love and joy. I have never had children so these are my replacements. Their unconditional love has made me a better person.

2. Art. I have a passion for art that I didn't know was possible. It gives me so much satisfaction and joy.

3. My memories. Many people lose their memories to Alzheimer's. My memories are precious to me as I think it must be devastating to face the loss of them.

4. The internet. I really enjoy the internet. It has provided me with many benefits I would otherwise not have had. I haven't traveled but with the internet, I can travel to just about anywhere I want. I can learn just about anything I have interest in. I have met so many friends thru the internet. I have learned about different cultures, languages, and even recipes like tomato gravy (Ick!).

5. I love to people watch. When I am in a line at a grocery store, at Costco, the mall, or anywhere, I love to watch people and their reactions to situations. You can learn so much about people just by watching them.

6. I like to watch television. I have always liked watching tv. I don't always "watch" but it is always on and in the background. I spend more time listening. It keeps me company and keeps my birds occupied. When some show has an outdoor scene, my parakeet comes alive listening to the bird sounds. Something I would not even notice if it weren't for her reaction.

7. Sweets. Especially chocolate. There is nothing like a nice cup of hot chocolate or chai latte. So sweet and luxurious on a cold day.

Well now you know my likes and be glad you don't get a list of my dislikes.

Now for the other artists who deserve a nice award.

Jo Castillo
Quirky Artist
Ai's arts
Marie-Dom/fleur
Wendy Prior
Joan Tavolott
Donna

If time doesn't permit a post, please just put the award on your site to let everyone know that your are is appreciated.

For some reason I couldn't post a link to each person's site but you can find their links in my side link area. Teresa's is also there if you would like to see her list.

Woohoo

My Moleskine sketchbook is working its way to its destination. I am so glad to have it finished and in the mail. In fact I am kind of in lala land. I haven't done any art for several days. I just can't get myself in the mood to do it. All I have done are some really lousy quick sketches for the scavenger hunt and those were because it was the last day of the hunt. I wanted to get something done for it. I will work on getting motivated again starting tomorrow. Or maybe tonight.

I stubbed my little toe against the vacuum today. I think it is probably broken. It is really black and blue. It had already been broken once in the 80s and since they don't do anything for broken toes, I just didn't see a doctor about it. It grew back crooked. And now it seems it will get even more crooked. It hurts to walk at all. That would be a nice change except that life goes on and you can't just sit on your back end 24 hours a day.

I picked today to change and wash the bedding. Now I have to go walk around the bed and get it remade. Hopefully hubby will help me and do his side of the bed.

Happy Birthday Bill

Today is my hubby's birthday. He is 59. He was born on Groundhog Day. He was also a preemie baby. Born at 3lbs 6oz. In the hospital for a month. If you have seen the photos of our us and our dogs in the Christmas photo, you will know that the man has more than made up for the lack of weight at birth.

He was a thin boy, but he said when they took out his tonsils, he started gaining and was over 200 lbs by his 8th grade graduation. Now those were some powerful tonsils (I'm glad I kept mine).

Once in an elevator at a hospital, we met a lady whose daughter or relative had just given birth to a little girl who weighed 3lbs something. When we told her about hubby, she looked at him in horror. She was imagining her little pint sized girl growing to such a large size. Her look made us laugh.

So tonight when hubby gets home, he will have leftover baked chicken, salad with hot sauce and hot peppers, and some German Chocolate cake. He should be a very happy man. Until tomorrow when he realizes 60 is just a hop, skip, and a jump away. I should know. For 3 months now, we will be the same age. Come May I have to go over the 60 mark.

I would post a recent photo of him I took against his will (he was in shorts, boots, no shirt) as he took out the trash. I couldn't believe he was going outside like that and I threatened to turn on the outside lights. He threatened my life if I post it or draw it. I guess turning 60 is better than being dead.

Moleskine Project Sketchbook Finished

Well as of 4:00AM I am finished with the project sketchbook. Hurray! Here are two more pages from the Moley.

Moley Project

I worked last night on my Moleskine Project book. I got 3 more double pages done or almost done. 3 more to go.

I took a look at some samples of other's books on the project website. Quite a variety. I can't believe that so many of them were able to add watercolor to their books. The pages are so thin, I was worried about the colored pencil and graphite. A couple pages the tear out line started to tear. And a couple other places my graphite poked a hole in the paper. But it is close to the finish now. I could let it be available for sale, but I think I will enclose a stamped envelope to get it back. I will put my email address and website in it in case someone would like to browse or even to buy something.

I plan to scan the most recent pages soon and will post another sample.

Bananas

I got this in an email. I thought it might interest others.

After Reading this, you will NEVER look at a banana in the same way again!

Bananas Contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel better.

PMS:
Forget the pills -- eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect way to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power:
200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex England ) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:
One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness

Mosquito bites:
Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work?
Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers:
The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control:
Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking:
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B-6 and B-12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress:
Potassium is a vital mineral which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes:
According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine," eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death from strokes by as much as 40%!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!

Ditto

I just finished another page in the Moley. This one was my baby Ditto. I will fill the other side with a few other things and make it a tribute page. I just have to look up when she was born. She was such a sweet little thing and we sure miss her.

I think that puts all my animals in the book. I will probably do a couple more, at least of Penny. I would love to do her eyes in color. They are the most beautiful goldish color.

I now have 7 1/2 full pages to do. Getting there slow but sure. I have been neglecting all my other projects tho. I haven't done anything for the scavenger hunt this time so will have to manage a few later today. The last day for it is the 29th so I will hopefully slide by just at the last minute.

We will be getting the addresses for the new project...24 of something... I still have a few left to finish for the Out of Africa. And I owe two ATCs to Toad Hollow Drawing Club. One a valentine. The one for Scribble Talk I have ready and waiting for a name and address of whom to send to. And last but not least for Drawspace. Those are all sent and most have arrived. I mailed a last add on one today to Ohio.

I suppose I am not too far behind but I felt a little pressure for a bit from the Moleskine. When I get that mailed off, I feel I can breathe again. Of course then I will worry that it makes it safely. When you are a worrier, you always find something to worry about.

January VSD

I almost forgot to do the VSD this month. I have missed the last couple of months and wanted to do this one. I need to get back into the swing of doing it. So I hurriedly did a partial of the peeled orange. About 15-20 minutes work in my Moleskine Sketchbook with colored pencils.

Boles Nursery en plein air

Here are some photos I took at the weekly outing. We went to a local plant nursery where we had been during the summer heat. It was a lot nicer with a touch of cold weather.

24 Of Something

Goody a new project is starting at Wetcanvas. You pick a theme and do 24 things of the theme. I already know what my theme will be. I have had it as an idea I've been kicking around for quite some time. It is memories from my childhood. Probably toys. I have gathered quite a few props. I was going to make a still life with all the things I used to play with when I was young.

Of course as a girl, I always had a lot of dolls. In fact I think I had a collection of about 20 different dolls at one time. My aunt and my mom loved buying them for me. They bought them until I was in 8th grade I think, and that last year I ended up with 4 dolls for Christmas. A bride doll, a 3 year old 3 ft doll, a rag doll my mom made, and a different brand and type adult doll like Barbie.

Other memories I have are playing with modeling clay. My two brothers and I each got a packet of 4 colors at least once a year at Christmas. We would play with that stuff for hours. At first we kept it separated into the colors but eventually it would get all mixed up and end up gray.

I would make little people, furniture, animals, and play house with them. I don't remember what my brothers made with theirs, but they had just as much fun with the clay as I did. Such an inexpensive toy and one that kept us busy for hours and hours and kept our imagination on fire.

I also played jacks and pickup sticks. Since I had no sisters, mom got stuck playing with me. We would play so many different games of jacks. Back then the balls were more rubbery; not like the plastic ones that come with jacks now. The new ones have a seam around them that makes the balls bounce way out of control. I'm sure I learned hand eye coordination and many other useful things from these two toys.

Then there were paper dolls. I would play with them and imagine all kinds of scenarios that they were in. At least as many scenarios as I had in my rather naive head at that time. Times were much more simple and my parents didn't have the money to expose us to the pleasures of dining out, Disneyland, or other "kid" things. Even our vacations were a time for my parents to get their yearly visit with their own parents. No nonsense trips there and back in a week with my dad driving straight thru (one trip a year was to Oklahoma).

Dad would stop along the road and catch a couple hours sleep and my brothers and I slept in the back seat. Mom dozed in the passenger seat. We stopped only long enough to get a loaf of bread, bologna, and something to drink. The Oklahoma trips were 2 days and 2 nights in the car going both ways. Thankfully mom's parents lived in Gridley, CA so that trip was much shorter. We had no idea that this was a normal vacation for everyone else.

Other things I remember from that simple life were penny candy, candy bars were 5 cents, marbles, little boxes that opened to secret openings, Mexican jumping beans, candy cigarettes, The Walt Disney show and Bonanza on Sunday evenings, running thru sprinklers to get cool, homemade "spoon" candy (fudge that didn't set up), homemade cinnamon rolls, homemade dinner rolls (and the wonderful smell), hopscotch, tetherball, a pot of beans cooking all day on the stove, and hurrying to be first to take my bath Sunday night so I would be ready to watch Disney. (Another thing I was unaware of until I was in junior high...that people took baths more than once a week)

It's funny when you grow up you only have your own life as a marker. We were very sheltered. Unlike most kids today, we did not go on sleepovers. My mom controlled when or if we had friends over and very rare that we got to go to someone else's house. My mom was scared to death something would happen to one of us. So we were not privy to what other people's daily life was like. I didn't know we were poor or that other families didn't live just like we did.

What an awakening when I got out in the world. Many embarrassing moments happened because of what I didn't know. In many ways I think that more simple way of life was much better. We depended on each other, we ate what we were given, and were able to occupy our time without all the electronics or always having to have a friend over. But I sure would miss my computer, my dishwasher, and my cell phone.

Thanks for taking my walk down memory lane with me.

Page from the Moleskin Project

Here is a peek inside my Moleskine Project book. This is our Yellow Lab Penny. She came to us when she was 9 months. She had separation anxiety. She had been turned over to a shelter, taken out as soon as she was ready, and then for the next week or so shuffled around to 3 different households.

After hearing her story and seeing her, we couldn't stand the thought of her being shuffled any longer. Once here, you stay. For animals at least.

When we brought her home, hubby left the next day for out of town work. The poor dog thought she lost another one. So when I went to do errands, my house suffered a Penny tornado. I even posted photos back then of the house when I got home.

After much love and working with her by taking short trips away from home and coming right back (many times in a day), she finally learned to trust that we would be returning. She still gets nervous if she can't find me, but she now knows she is home. She will be 3 this year and a joy for both of us.

Moleskine Project

Well I finally am putting something in my Moleskine. I sealed all the pages already filled as I found they were getting smeared. But...HORRORS...a couple of the colored pages bled thru the paper to the other side. Seems this one blue violet I used to add to black was the culprit.

Nothing can be done to fix it. It will now just have to go that way. I will now back graphite to graphite and colored pencil to colored pencil. It's a shame as I did a picture of the baby across the street and her two teen parents. The baby has a blue mark on her face. And my hubby has the same marks.

More floral pictures from the trade

I finished the flower/plant cards for the trade on Drawspace. In fact they went out in the mail yesterday. Fourteen little cards out in the world traveling to their new homes. The ones in the US could start arriving tomorrow.

What a great bunch of people on this trade. We usually have one male. This time 4 males joined (their luck that it was the floral one). But they have kept us entertained by posting about their macho deprivation time. In fact one said after doing a flower card, he was going to go watch hockey, eat peanuts, drink whiskey, and spit on the floor to regain his masculine self. We are having a grand time laughing thru it all. I did take pity on the guys and didn't give them frilly flowers.

Well it is that time of the month that my hair gets a makeover. Time to wash away the gray. Then a couple errands. I have never liked getting my hair messed with. It's now a necessity as I hate dealing with coloring and dyes at home. The one thing I have no patience with is coloring my hair or hair appointments in general. So I take a blank card and sit and draw.

I can't see to read without my glasses and who wants the stems of their glasses all messed up with yukky color. So I was just sitting with a glazed face while others around me were reading "glamor" magazines or tabloid stuff. Not that I wouldn't want to read the tabloid stuff, but not trying to squint my way thru which in turn would bring on a headache. So I draw instead.

Have you ever tried to draw in a hair salon? It's not easy. Too much activity. Not a good view. And not too interesting subjects. It would be ok to draw people but they are not at their best. Aluminum foil squares all over their heads folded into these little hair pockes with colored stuff oozing. Hair rollers. Spikes of hair going every which way with nastly looking, unappetizing color (sometimes even purple yuk) all over. If men had to see women in this situation, I'm not sure they would ever marry. And what's really funny...women don't seem at all embarrassed for other women to see them like this.

Well back to flowers. Here are my finished florat ATC cards. Now I can get down to business on my little Moleskine Project book. The time for it to fly away is fast approaching, and I have not even put a dent in filling it.

My Sketchcrawl Day

The weather here was really foggy today and better to stay off the roads. So I decided to do my sketching at home. I had a very good time except now my right shoulder is killing me from all the circles I made with the colored pencil. Ouch!

You can click each picture to see it full sized.

Drawspace Trading Cards

I have 9 ATCs finished for the Drawspace flower/plant trade. I haven't mailed them yet but I have posted in the forum that I would be posting them here. If they want to see and try to guess which one they will get, they can. If they want it to be a surprise, they just can't visit my blog.

These are the 6 that I have scanned so far.

21st Worldwide Sketchcrawl

The next sketchcrawl is #21. It is January 16 which is this next Saturday. I think hubby is off that weekend. He has plans for us to go to Costco. But I will be participating. Even if I have to find a chair in Costco to sit down and sketch. Maybe we will go for breakfast before and I can get one there too. It should be interesting. I do love people watching at Costco. Such a variety of things and people. But they don't really stand still for long. Even when they are sampling the tidbits they hand out for samples.

My Goals for 2009

I haven't thought too much about this but I guess that I should. Especially as the year seems to fly by so fast. I do have several things I want to work on during the coming year.

1. I want to continue to improve my colored pencil art. I have been doing it about a year now and even though I still consider graphite my medium of choice, colored pencil is slowly working it's way to the top. The main thing I would like to work on this year with colored pencil is portraits.

I can do portraits of animals and get the shading and contours of faces, but when I try to do the same with people faces with color, I seem to have a hard time. The faces seem to look dirty to me. And as I've admitted many times, I just don't "see" the different colors in faces.

I see many beautiful portraits that have blues, greens, purples and many other colors. But when I look at a face, I just can't seem to see those colors. I think maybe I should just start with one color and try with it. Since I can do portraits in the Derwent Drawing pencils using only 3 colors, there should not be this much problem for me. But....

2. I have been very lax at drawing every day (which I preach to people all the time). I was drawing every day for over a year or so. Lately I go days without doing anything at all. I have even stopped doing much in the Scavenger Hunts. I plan to participate more in the hunts and draw something daily. I'd better hurry for today as I haven't done anything yet today.

3. I need to spend less time on the computer. When I am home, I spend off and on all day on the computer. I will check email and the threads at Wetcanvas and that will lead to something else and on and on. When you do that several times a day (and quite late in the night), you don't get much of anything else done.

4. I want to spend more time reading some of the art books I have. I like to read but since I found art, I very rarely read a book. Plus I fall asleep reading (and with the late nights, I fall asleep sitting up in front of the computer).

5. I need to eat healthier. I have gained so much weight since last January. I had lost weight from my Knee surgery but made up for that and then some. I don't eat right and I like Dr. Pepper and sweets. Not a good combination.

6. I want to spend more time on my Bible studies and going to church. I have let that become a once in awhile thing and that is not good enough. I need to feed my spiritual side more and show my appreciation for the life I have been given.

7. Back to art. I want to spend some time doing some artwork that gets framed and can be used for hanging in the local art association gallery. Most of what I do never gets framed unless I am doing it for a competition/show at the gallery.

8. I will continue to enter the open shows at the gallery where my artwork hangs for a month during each competition. And I will continue to go with my plein air group on Wednesday mornings.

9. I plan to get more sleep. My days and nights have been turned around. I don't feel as good lately because I don't get enough sleep. With a truck driver for a spouse, my sleep gets disturbed at different times each day. His schedule changes every day. He sometimes leaves in the wee hours. Even though I don't get up with him, I am half awake while he is getting ready for work. Then can't get back to sleep.

Other times I will be up late, help him get off to work, then go to bed. Even when I go to bed at a decent time, I tend to lie awake until the wee hours. And by wee, I mean 4 or 5 am. Then I sleep till 10 unless the dogs wake me to go out. Those times leave me with a headache (and the falling asleep sitting up at the computer).

10. I will try to at least keep my house a little more orderly. (and that doesn't mean ironing sheets Katherine-can't believe anyone irons sheets) I don't even iron shirts. When I put something in the dryer, it had better come out ready to wear.

There are quite a few more things I could list but I will stop at 10. These 10 will be a hard enough road for me to follow. If I am getting more sleep, when will I spend more time on housework, art, Bible study, etc, etc, etc. So you see my problem. Anyone know how to stretch more hours out of a day?

Happy New Year to all.
